WORK to build a path to a new primary school site that was criticised for its lack of road safety measures is to be completed within weeks.

A new path to the Glasdir Estate site of Rhos Street School and Ysgol Pen Barras in Ruthin will allow some parents and children to avoid using busy main roads to travel to and from school.

The schools, which cater for a total of 500 pupils aged five to 11, moved to their new shared site in April.

The new path, which was agreed to before the summer, will lead from the Cae Seren housing estate near Parc y Dre Road through the fields adjacent to Ruthin Football Club and the Memorial Fields, opening onto Denbigh Road next to Glasdir Estate.

Denbighshire County Council (DCC) arranged a term-long trial period to understand the travel patterns of families to and from the school before the summer break, however the lack of road safety measures prior to the opening received criticism from parents and councillors, including AM for North Wales Llyr Gruffydd.

The path building has been carried out by DCC.

Bryn Jones, headteacher for Rhos Street School, said: "The footpath will run alongside the football club and provide a shortcut to the school.

"The path was agreed to before the summer break.

"It is not a designated cycle path.

"It will provide an additional structure to facilitate the travel of pupils to and from the Glasdir site."

A spokesperson for DCC said: "Improving the safety of children walking to and from school is a priority and the footpaths work is expected to be completed in the next two weeks.

"We will be informing the schools and the local community when the work is about to start."
