A controlled explosion has taken place after artillery was found in Park Hall.

Bomb Disposal teams and emergency services were on hand as old wartime shells were detonated in a field near the building site off Artillery Road.

Later this afternoon the army will carry out further controlled explosions, say the police.

West Mercia police has confirmed that a controlled explosion will take place and that local residents have not been evacuated but have been advised to remain at the back of their property and away from windows.

A police spokesperson said: "This is purely a precaution and based on advice from the army who are well equipped at dealing with such incidents.

"Police, the army, fire and local authority continue to work together to keep any disruption to a minimum while ensuring the safety of the public and would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation."

This follows a controlled explosion which took place this morning.

Residents in the area were warned they may hear a small bang as the explosion took place, while officers were on hand to offer reassurance.

Andrew Jones from Chartland Homes, the developer of the Park Crescent site, has said there is no danger to residents.

Mr Jones added ordnance has been found during an ongoing investigation on the Park Crescent site, and that transportation of artillery is all part of a planned procedure.

He said: "This is a completely planned procedure and there is no danger to residents."

A resident, who wishes not to be named, has told The Advertizer the explosion took place at 12.40pm, but contradicted claims of a small bang, by saying that there was "big booming noise with sand sent high into the air."
