Designed by artist Tim Turner and created at the Castle Arts Foundry in Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant, the statue depicts soldier Wilfred Owen who was born in Plas Wilmot, Weston Lane.

The war poet is surrounded by poems written by pupils from schools around Oswestry.

The unveiling ceremony was started when Oswestry Town Mayor, Councillor Sandy Best, welcomed the visitors.

Soprano Natasha Day then performed Written in a Wood, an adaptation of the 1910 Wilfred Owen poem.

Festival organiser Chris Woods gave an introduction and Thoren Ferguson performed The Somme which was played on the Wilfred Owen violin.

The statue was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Sir Algernon Heber-Percy and Cllr Best, after which Reverend Harvey Gibbons blessed the statue.

Writer in residence at Oswestry Library Dave Andrews read Owen’s poem Anthem for Doomed Youth, before the Last Post was played by Yvonne Furber and a minute’s silence.
