PUPILS at primary school in Ruthin have practised their baking skills to raise dough for a charity close to the school's heart.

Ysgol Gellifor held a cake sale at the school's hall to raise £180 for Macmillan Cancer.

Baked delights such as fairy cakes, cookies and muffins were baked by the school's nursery group and staff, and went down a treat with pupils during the school day.

Tracy Roberts, nursery teaching assistant, said: "We are really surprised with how much has been raised, it was a great effort.

"The pupils had a great time and they knew the money was going to charity.

The school made the decision to donate to Macmillan after one of its year three pupils was diagnosed with leukaemia and another child's parent died from cancer.

Ms Roberts added: "Cancer has affected a lot of us, which is why we chose the charity this year."

The Ruthin school's pupils learn to bake in their later years there, when they are introduced to skills such as measuring and fractions.

Richard Pugh, head of services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said: “We would like to offer our warmest thanks to all the amazing pupils, teachers and parents of Ysgol Gellifor for their fantastic cake sale efforts.

“Every service, every Macmillan professional, every little bit of support we provide to people with cancer is funded by the huge generosity of the public. We really couldn’t do what we do without the help of people like the pupils of Ysgol Gellifor and they should be hugely proud of their efforts and the difference they are making.

“This is a fantastic total raised by a group of young people, and I and everyone on the Macmillan team would like to thank them wholeheartedly for their support.”
