A MAN has taken a stand after yobs daubed obscenities on a medieval castle.

Mick Sparham Thompkins, 45, has set up an online crowdfunding appeal after custodians revealed that a vandals had put Whittington Castle's financial future in jeopardy.

The attack was the latest in a series of incidents on Castle Street, which Mr Thompkins saw while taking his son Charlie, eight, to Whittington Primary School.

"It was just shocking and sickening really - it was just terrible," he said

"I read the article in the Advertizer about how much they had to pay out for other things and that this further compounds their financial situation.

"I thought that there's so many people who take the place for granted – people go there for walks, have weddings and other events as well – and I thought it would be nice if people could put their hands in their pockets for whatever they can afford and give some money."

Officers have appealed for information after receiving a report of four or five youngsters spraying graffiti on properties in Castle Street.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said that graffiti had been sprayed onto the castle wall, as reported in last week’s Advertizer, and car bonnets were being jumped on. (Reference 0690s 111018).

Later, three people were reported to be spraying graffiti on pub walls and a car in Station Road was also vandalised with spray paint.

Anyone with information can call West Mercia Police on 101 and quote the relevant incident reference.
