A HOSPITAL housekeeper has been hailed for raising the alarm for a seriously ill patient.

Chat Davies, who works as a Housekeeper on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt (RJAH) Orthopaedic Hospital, received the Chief Executive and Chairman’s Commendation.

Rebecca Warren, ward manager on MCSI, said that Chat’s swift judgement and persistence potentially saved the patient’s life.

She said: “Chat has stood out to me many times before this particular occasion but I feel this time she needs to be recognised.

“The day this happened, everyone was busy trying to plan for the day ahead, and it was then that Chat came running over because she was extremely concerned about one of our patients.

“She was speaking very loudly, asking me to quickly go over to the patient, who was in the side room because the patient looked extremely poorly. She repeated this many times to ensure that I listened to her.

“It was clear she was worried, so we went over to the patient straight away. Chat was right, the patient was very ill and needed medical assistance right away.

She added: “I strongly believe if Chat didn’t raise her concerns things would have been a lot different, and I’m truly grateful to her for her excellent observation skills and the care she showed.

“It would’ve been very easy for Chat to have shied away, and kept her head down but she didn’t, she guaranteed our patient got the immediate medical attention they gravely required.”

Chat said: “I feel very honoured but also shocked to receive this sort of recognition. I definitely wasn’t expecting it, all I did was do what any of us would’ve done in that sort of situation.

Chat received the award from chief executive Mark Brandreth and chairman Frank Collins at the trust’s annual general meeting,.

Mr Collins said that the commendation is ‘richly deserved’ showed the importance of speaking out.

He added: “Chat demonstrated complete courage and outstanding care that day. Well done Chat.”

Mr Brandreth said: “Chat’s actions on that day speak volumes about the type of person she is. She’s caring, conscientious and absolutely goes above and beyond for our patients. She wasn’t afraid to speak up and that takes real courage, which is why Chat absolutely deserves this special commendation award.”
