COMMUNNTY spirit blossomed during a village apple pressing event.

Dozens gathered to the Cross Foxes car park, Nannerch, to wash, cut, dice and press the hundreds of apples that were collected from residents' gardens.

Children particularly enjoyed the event, with the opportunity to get their hands dirty and put a chilly Saturday morning to use.

Adults also enjoyed the fruits of their labour, as the pressed apples will be bottled and distilled in the pub function room, next to the boiler, creating delicious homemade cider for the community to enjoy.

Janet Costidell, land lady of the Cross Foxes, organised the event as not to waste the dozens of bags of apples that had been donated from residents around the village.

She said: "I decided to host the event here because everybody has got so many apples growing, it would be a shame to waste them. It's a good way to get the community together, and gives families something fun to do. I'll hopefully do it next year, depending on how the cider turns out.

"The pressed juice will be put in the function room hut, which has air locks and it takes two to three weeks to ferment. It's great to see everybody from the village mucking in."

Monique Duffy Brogan, of Nannerch, was one mum who wanted to get rid of the apples on their "huge tree in the garden."

She said: "I said to Janet that we have lots and lots of apples going to waste, and I asked if we could hold a community apple pressing event." Janet kindly let out her car park, which was covered in apples and apple peel, and the pub for fermenting the juice which she said would be lovely to be served hot on bonfire night next month.
