THE SIXTH annual Oswestry Community Games event is set to take place this weekend at Cae Glas Park.

Sport, music and dance from diverse organisations in the area will be providing free activities for visitors to enjoy.

Last year, there were around 1,000 people of different ages at the park, and organisers are hoping that there will be at least that amount in attendance this time round.

Organiser Clive Knight said: “The hope is that participants will try out a new activity and take it up after the Community Games.

“This year, we welcome newcomers Atlantic Mavericks with their boat based in Oswestry, Oswestry Climbing Centre, Mascha Willutzki – Yoga, Chirk Leisure Centre, Pyjama Drama and Slimming World, and hope they all enjoy the experience.”

This year’s guest of honour is Di Carrington, the 62-year-old from Pontesbury who formed part of the trio who took on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge, becoming the oldest woman in the world to do so.

She will be meeting everyone and taking part in activities including testing herself on a rowing machine.

Her chosen charity for the Games to support is Relapsing Polychondritis.

Girl guides local to the games will again be a key support to the day helping it run smoothly, and David Davies returns from 2016 to again take the role of MC.

Clive said: “Many thanks to our sponsors Wynnstay Hotel, Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing, Arla Foods, Oswestry Town Council, Mary Hignett Bequest Fund and Oswestry Sports Forum for their financial support. Without their financial support, the Games would not happen.”

Town Mayor Councillor Sandy Best added: “As a Town Council we fully support Oswestry Community Games.

“I personally try to frequent the event and have always enjoyed the activities and marvel at the way the community comes together.

“What a great day out it is to see a showcase of local organisations; to try a new sport; watch displays and enjoy local sport, art, music and dance. Year on year it gets bigger and better. This is a headline community event in our local calendar and long may it continue.”
