A LIVESTOCK market has enjoyed a record-breaking day of business.

Oswestry Livestock Market had a record entry of 5,544 prime lambs and 2,105 cull ewes on Wednesday - the largest numbers in living memory.

Jon Bevan, a cull ewe auctioneer and shareholder at the market, was expecting a busy day but could not have imagined that sheep numbers would reach such levels.

"We’ve started to get into the main sheep selling season here in the Welsh borders and it was fantastic to see such an excellent presentation of quality stock," he said

"With every sheep pen in the market, full market staff penned sheep in cattle pens which since the development works have been made dual purpose and means more sheep can be housed at the market with better welfare standards."

Mr Bevan was keen to thank all concerned for helping make the day such a success

He said:"We’ve always had a loyal customer base here which is growing week on week, together with a good selection of buyers and a hardworking team of staff which help to ensure that our stock is sold for the best possible price whilst making the whole process as stress free for the animals as possible."
