TRIUMPH at the Oswestry Show marked the end of one animal's showing days

Grace Corbett's two year old Charolais heifer Magnolia was named interbreed and overall champion in the Beef category.

Grace, 22, who farms near Knighton in Powys, told how the beast would now going into retirement and is set to start calving in February.

Of the victory, Grace said: "I'm thrilled, over the moon. She looked really good so I was hopeful but you can never tell how they're going to do, so I'm really happy.

"There were many Charolais here but in terms of interbreed there were some really good cattle, so we wouldn't have really minded losing to some of them because they were so good - but obviously really happy to have beaten them because a lot of them did really well at national shows."

Grace also won the Charolais championship with Magnolia at the Royal Welsh Show this year.

She told of the work that goes into preparing an animal like Magnolia for competitions.

"It's a lot of work. You have to wash them, cut their hair - there's a lot of preparation - and obviously feeding them throughout the year as well, she said

"A lot of work goes into it, but when you win it obviously makes it all worth it."

Laura Astley, 24, took first place with her year-old Ayrshire cow in the Maiden Heifer category in only her second event.

Laura, Deytheur near Llansantffraid, was also victorious in the same category – although with a different animal - when she competed for the first time at the Shropshire Show.

Her victory at the Oswestry Showground was all the more special as it was only Laura’s second show.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” she said

She told how taking part in the Grand Parade later in the day would be a highlight of the event for her.

Laura, who works full-time at her family farm, told why she started showing cattle.

“I quite like the whole atmosphere – it’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do,” she said

Her sights are now set on the National Calf Show in Peterborough in October, taking her winning cow with her.
