A COLLEGE has been awarded a prize for improving standards and developing excellence in music for students.

Ellesmere College was victorious in the School Music category of the Education Business Awards at a ceremony in London.

The Education Business Awards, now in their 12th year, were presented by lexicographer and Countdown star Susie Dent, with

Ellesmere College beat four other finalists to win its award.

Headteacher Brendan Wignall said he was delighted that the college was awarded this prize - having been shortlisted for the past two years as well.

“Our music department is well and truly outstanding,” he added.

“The staff work incredibly hard to make it a competitive and successful environment, nurturing talent and encouraging all those involved.

“It has built up a wonderful reputation across many countries and has seen many students go on to achieve great musical goals.

“The department continues to grow and thrive with an increase in both standards and opportunities for students at Ellesmere College and members of the wider community.

“This award is recognition for all the work that goes into making the music department in Ellesmere what it is today and is a great way to round off the year.”

This comes off the back of a hugely successful and busy year for music at the college, under the leadership of Anthony Coupe, director of music.

The Chamber Choir reached the finals of both the Barnardo's National Choir Competition at the Royal Festival Hall, and the BBC Youth Choir of the Year competition, televised on Songs of Praise.

The Chapel Choir also made high profile performances including concerts at both St Peter's Basilica and the Pantheon in Rome and the High Sherriff's Legal Service for Shropshire.

This year the college has launched a new community orchestra, Ellesmere Sinfonia, and the Chamber Music School.
