NORTH Shropshire's MP has come out fighting against the government's Brexit plans.
Owen Paterson has claims that pro-Brexit voters have been "lied to" and "shafted" after the publication of the White Paper outlining
He said: "This is much worse than we thought. We have been lied to. This document breaks manifesto commitments. It’s really, really bad."
Speaking after a meeting with Euro-sceptic think tank the Bruges Group, Mr Paterson said that the White Paper "has to be stopped".
He said: "This has to be stopped. The anger around this place is shocking right now.
"We voted to escape EU regulations under EU Withdrawal Act just a few weeks ago. This proposal says we put all that back in, and it cannot be amended. Ever.
"Brexiteers aren’t stupid; they know they are being shafted if this proposal goes through. I will do everything in my power to stop it.”
Among the White Paper's proposals is a free trade area with the phased introduction of a new Facilitated Customs Arrangement that would remove the need for customs checks and controls between the UK and the EU.
Also proposed is a common rulebook for goods including agri-food, avoiding a hard Irish border and "developing a broad and deep economic relationship with the EU that maximises future prosperity".
