Builth Wells will see safety and welfare improvements introduced in time for this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

Wales’ largest agricultural show, which begins on July 23, has introduced a number of safety features following the tragic death of Powys young farmer, James Corfield, last summer.

A new ‘Green Route’ path, with finger-post signs and green footprints, will direct visitors from the town centre to the showground, Penmaenau Farm and campsite, and the YFC Young People’s Village.

Existing public footpaths in the area will not be closed during the event and stewards will be on-hand at night to help direct people.

The safety and welfare improvements have been introduced following the death of young farmer James Corfield last summer.

A temporary fence, funded by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, will be erected between the Groe and the river to help improve safety. The fence will be put in place before the show and removed after the event.

Street pastors will operate in the town in the run up to the show week and throughout the four-day event. They will be based at the former Tourist Information Centre, supported by staff from Powys County Council’s youth service, at night.

The Welsh Ambulance Service will have additional resources in the area, including a 4x4 joint response vehicle.

Improved CCTV will also be in operation in the town during the show period.

The Royal Welsh Show app includes a local map of the ‘Green Route’ and useful information for visitors. The free app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android.

The Royal Welsh Show introduced the safety and welfare improvements following a wide-ranging review and recommendations by the Builth Wells Event Safety Group.

The safety group includes key organisations, such as Powys County Council, all emergency services, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, Builth Wells Town Council, Penmaenau Farm, Wales YFC, event organisers, local councillors and volunteers, working together to improve the safety and welfare of people in the area during the Royal Welsh Show week.

The safety group will continue to review safety and welfare arrangements and recommend improvements for future events.
