Llanfyllin's new mayor had the honour of representing Montgomeryshire at Prince Charles' 70th birthday celebrations earlier this week.

Simon Baynes attended the garden party at Buckingham Palace as chairman of the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust, of the Prince of Wales in a patron.

He was joined by Maldwyn Rees, treasurer, Jo Davidson, vice chairman, Glynis Shaw, publications officer and Elaine Davey, trustee.

Cllr Baynes said: "It was a wonderful occasion which started with a heartfelt speech by Prince Harry praising the charity work of his father and saying what an inspiration this had been to Prince William and himself. He also recognised the courage of the emergency services one year ago during the terrorist attack in Manchester."

The afternoon was also the first public engagement by the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their marriage at the weekend.

Cllr Baynes continued: "The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall then spent the afternoon meeting hundreds of people attending the Garden Party including WHGT.

"The weather was perfect and the grounds of Buckingham Palace looked immaculate.

"With the lake, lawns and trees, you would never have believed that this was central London."

The Welsh Historic Gardens Trust is thriving with 10 branches across Wales and rising membership.

"The trust works to preserve and celebrate the parks and gardens across Wales and the dedication of our patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, has

been a big part of our success," added Cllr Baynes.
