Roads around Oswestry are set to receive a major investment as part of an annual programme.

The 'North West' region will see 21 roads - more than anywhere else in the county - receive repairs as part of the summer surface dressing programme which runs from June 22 until the end of August.

These include Racecourse Road in Oswestry, Castle Street in Whittington and the public footpath in Llawnt.

Surface dressing, which involves applying and rolling aggregate ‘chippings’ onto a binder, maintains skid-resistance and waterproof road surfaces and forms part of the £6 million investment in the county's roads.

Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, explained that over 43 per cent of the sites across Shropshire will require a temporary road closure for the works to be carried out safely, but added most of the closures will only be required for a few hours for the dressing operation.

He continued: “As well as improving and protecting our road surfaces, this important programme of work plays a crucial role in helping to prevent potholes and other defects forming in the future. Pothole treatment is very much about prevention as well as cure and this is one important way that we can aim to prevent potholes forming next winter.”

The programme of work may alter due to wet weather or other unforeseen events, and information letters will be delivered to affected residents and businesses, and advance information signs will be on site at least 10 days prior to the due start date.
