A man is running seven Ultra Challenges to raise money for The Orthopaedic Hospital.

Stuart Fowlie is completing the 2018 Ultra Challenge series to raise funds for the Oswestry-based hospital after his wife, Gaynor Fowlie, was under the care of the Veterans’ Service.

The hospital provides an NHS service exclusively for Veterans which is open to those who have served with the UK military with arthritic lower limb problems.

Stuart said: “Gaynor had suffered an injury during her Forces service, and has lived with a damaged and painful knee and leg for many years.

“However, last year this all changed thanks to Lieutenant Colonel Carl Meyer and his team at RJAH after she had a total knee replacement.”

The Ultra Challenge series consists of seven events across six months which include the Isle of Wight challenge, London 2 Brighton, Cotswold Way, Jurassic Cost, Wye Valley, the South Coast challenge, the Thames Path and Thames Bridges Trek.

Stuart will then finish his challenge by completing the Longmynd Hike to take his combined total distance to 500 miles.

He continued: “Gaynor has always been my biggest supporter so in attempt to say thank you to the hospital, I have taken on the challenge of running and jogging these seven 100km plus races and finishing off with the Longmynd Hike.

“Currently, I am focused on finishing the Isle of Wight challenge but I must admit I’m looking forward to completing all the races – it’s going to be an extraordinary experience.”

Stuart is aiming to raise £3,000 for RJAH through his fundraising efforts.

He said: “There are veterans out there, old and young who can all benefit from this wonderful little known service.

“I have even challenged Lt Col Meyer to join me for the Longmynd Hike, I might be in need of his services by the end of all this!”

Mark Brandreth, Chief Executive, said: “Our fundraisers help us provide the best possible service we can for our patients, and Stuart’s efforts are no exception.

“I wish him the very best of luck throughout all his events and can’t thank him enough for choosing to fundraise for us.”
