MY FIRST visit to The Poachers in Chirk for many years left me wishing I’d returned sooner as I was impressed by the way the place has changed.

It was always a place for a good, hearty meal and that, I am pleased to say, is one aspect that has remained the same.

But I certainly have no complaints about the changes to the decor, the building, and definitely not about the outdoor seating area which has transformed the atmosphere of the canal-side into a trendy little hot spot which must flourish in the summer months.

My friend and I were able to enjoy a drink in the warm evening air as we waited for a table after deciding to go out to eat on impulse rather than booking ahead, which I would recommend to be sure of being seated immediately on a Friday night.

Once sat at our table, we enjoyed being amidst a jolly atmosphere in which to peruse the menu.

My mouth watered in anticipation of the Wensleydale, cranberry and beetroot tart I opted to start with which looked tantalisingly tasty – even to someone like me who doesn't even like beetroot – but I would certainly order it again.

My friend plumped for the rotisserie chicken and ham terrine complete with toasted ciabatta slices and caramelised onion chutney which also tasted great.

However, the fiddly pot it arrived in proved an unnecessary hassle although the sentiment regarding its presentation was appreciated.

Now I'm not one for eating burgers in restaurants but after my beetroot success I decided to live on the edge and the promise of a wild boar and chorizo burger topped with Monterey Jack cheese and barbecue sauce was just too much to turn down. I had no regrets.

Opposite me arrived a simple yet succulent five ounce gammon steak with chips and a choice of pineapple or fried egg.

If I hadn't been concentrating so much on devouring my burger I may well have had time to be jealous.

I ensured, despite some difficulty, that I made room for a slice of the Irish cream and caramel cheesecake that helped light up a very extensive dessert menu which topped off my evening.

And I even found space to share in the honeycomb sundae which my just as full friend ordered at the last minute.

All in all I am looking forward to my next visit, and now I know what to expect, no doubt I'll be happy to turn up a little early to enjoy the pleasant outdoor area even if I do book ahead next time.
