A CHIRK Councillor has welcomed plans for a new metro system in Wrexham.

The Welsh Government’s proposed public transport scheme would include a mixture of trams, upgraded railway stations and better bus services.

The new transport system will see improved links between north Wales areas such as Wrexham, Llandudno and Rhyl as well as Chester and Liverpool.

Councilor Terry Evans, Wrexham Councillor for Chirk South, said that any plans to improve the transport links in North Wales are very welcome.

“There’s lots of money being put into this project and we fully support anything that will bring more people to the area.”

“I’ve also seen the figures of Chirk Castle from the past year and they have risen dramatically. If we get improved transport links to our area tourism will also get a boost and our facilities will also benefit.”

About £50m has been announced for the first phase of the development of the scheme.

Ken Skates, Clwyd South AM, said: “It is a major long term scheme which will unlock the potential of the economy and meet the expectations of people who wish to use public transport, but at the moment find there are too many barriers to doing so.

“There is huge potential to deliver increased economic growth in north Wales. A modern, high quality integrated transport system is fundamental to achieving that potential and I am committed to working to make that a reality.”

The Welsh Government is said to be investing about £600m in transport schemes in North Wales.
