A new town councillor was confirmed in Chirk last week following an election in the town’s north ward.

Chirk resident Sarah Williams triumphed in Thursday’s polls earning more than double the votes received by rival candidate Jon Maddocks.

Three polling stations were opened for voting day at Chirk Methodist Chapel, as well as venues in Halton and Pentre.

Mrs Williams, 43, earned 186 votes, compared to the 81 received by Mr Maddocks.

A mother of two and a keen fundraiser, Mrs Williams was presented with Chirk’s Citizen of the Year award in 2012.

Her pre-election campaign literature outlined her love of the town and her commitment to representing the concerns of town residents.

It read: “If elected, I will be working as hard as I can for you. I am passionate about this beautiful place in which I grew up. I know I can make a difference to the local area and I need your support to do this.”

The election was prompted following the death of long-serving town councillor Hilary Spragg in May.

Mrs Williams will become the 15th member of the current town council, which hosts public meetings on the last Wednesday of each month at the Parish Hall.

The next scheduled town council meeting will be on Wednesday, September 28.
