OSWESTRY Eagles have secured promotion to the South Lancs Cheshire One league as they put in yet another impressive performance on Sunday.

They welcomed Ruskin Park, who also had hopes of maintaining their impressive win tally and moving up a league, but the visitors were in for a shock when the whistle was blown at Granville Park.

Oswestry attacked from the beginning with great moves and speed that put Ruskin on the back foot. A penalty given close to the 22-metre line gave The Eagles first blood thanks to Fin Grogan and Oswestry were urged on by the roar of the crowd again as they hunted for a gap that would give them a try and they were awarded another penalty that Grogan dispatched.

Ruskin were bewildered but began to play a tough northern style of rugby. They were unsuccessful in converting their penalties, but their pressure eventually saw them over the line and with a successful conversion put them 6-7 ahead at half-time.

Kick-off saw Oswestry on the attack again as Tom Hill and Gaz Hughes worked together to see Hill over the line. Grogan converting for maximum points.

This saw Oswestry take control of the game and another penalty put them even further ahead before Hughes took advantage of a yellow card for Ruskin as he picked up the ball and headed for the try line.

Ruskin Park were struggling with the impressive line of Oswestry stopping any potential attack and another penalty, and the confident Grogan converting, made any hopes of promotion disappear for the visitors as the final whistle blew for 23-7.

The Lanyard Bowdler man of the match was Tom Hill.

A spokesperson said: “Oswestry RUFC would like to thank all the supporters who came down to watch this clash of champions.

“We now look forward to playing at Level 7 against some very good teams in this new league and would invite any aspiring youngster to come training at the start of the new season.”
