A PROMINENT former stately home in Oswestry may be converted into residential housing if development plans are approved. Shropshire Council’s North planning committee will convene this afternoon (Tuesday) to discuss the proposed alterations to Brogyntyn Hall. Plans have been submitted to demolish part of the 18th Century building’s service wing and convert the existing farmhouse in the grounds into 11 residential units. The plans also propose the erection of 50 dwellings within the grounds as well as the demolition of the extant estate office and agricultural sheds plus alterations to the Dairy Cottage and the creation of a new access road. Dozens of objections to the proposal have been raised online via Shropshire Council’s planning portal and a Facebook group named ‘Save Brogyntyn Hall, Oswestry’ currently has more than 300 members in their campaign against the plans. The Facebook group’s administrator, Alexandra Dobson, has condemned the plans. She said: “The applications, if they go ahead, will not just mean the demolition of a substantial portion of a lovely old historic building but the creation of a new village, new road and new infrastructure to support the development. “It will also mean that in a few years time the town will expand in the ‘infill gap’ as planning on adjacent land will by default become much easier to obtain. “Surely a development of such a size and with such long term implications is a matter for public debate?”, she added. The planning meeting will be held at 2pm at Shirehall, Shrewsbury.
