ST MARTINS boxer Zac Williams is celebrating winning the Welsh Novice Title following an exhilarating contest in South Wales at the weekend.

Zac, 14, became the new champion after coming out on top over three rounds against Cardiff fighter, Joshua Akito, at the 59 kilogramme weight.

The Maelor Boxing Club youngster, who trains out of its base in Cefn Mawr, won two of the three closely contested rounds to snatch victory, taking the first by 5-3 and the third 15-14 after Akito had edged the second round 10-9.

His coach, Butch Jones, recently praised Zac for his dedication, and his hard work certainly paid off in what was regarded as the fight of the night on an evening which saw Zac’s stablemate, Joe Smith, also come out victorious on the same card.

“To travel for three-and-a-half hours in the back of a car to South Wales and then to box like that was great and I would like to congratulate both lads on their performances,” Butch said.

Zac only took up the sport nine months ago but has already shown that he is one to watch as the win saw him maintain his unbeaten record.
