COLEMERE Sailing Club is celebrating after securing Olympic legacy funding in order to upgrade its launching and safety facilities.

The club, which has been sailing on the mere at Colemere since 1959, received £31,000 from the Inspired Facilities Fund which forms part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy.

Having received the funding, Colemere Sailing Club will also be able to carry the London 2012 Inspire mark celebrating its link to the Games. Sport England chairman, Richard Lewis said: “This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for the Ellesmere area.
“Colemere Sailing Club caters for serious sailors, racers, improvers and families wanting to introduce their children to the sport,” he added.

The improvements will include new purpose-built jetties and a new rescue boat.
Club commodore, Hugh Farrington said: “It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics legacy.
“We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our launching facilities and rescue boat to meet the needs of our sailors, to bring our safety cover to the high standards required and to complement our wonderful 19th century clubhouse.”

North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson, hailed the funding as “great news” both for the club’s existing members and for its future with regular events and competitions taking place throughout the year.
