A TEENAGE girl has died following a fire at a children's care home in Bagley Marsh near Ellesmere, the cause of which is still unknown.

The girl, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene at the Bryn Melyn Care Home after emergency services were called to the property at around 11.30pm on Saturday night.

The fire was confined to the bedroom of the property and when officers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service entered they found the teenager inside.

Paramedics delivered first aid but were unable to revive her and she was declared dead at the scene at 12.25am on Sunday.

The girl's two professional carers were unharmed in the incident which was attended to by fire crews from Ellesmere, Baschurch and Wem.

A statement released by Bryn Melyn Care managing director Steve Nevitt said: "Our thoughts go out in particular to her family and friends, as well as the care, education and clinical staff who have worked so closely with her during her time with us.

"We have instigated a full internal review and will be cooperating fully with all the relevant local emergency services and Ofsted to ensure that this terrible event is investigated thoroughly and the cause of the fire established."

Walsall Council, which is responsible for the girl, has expressed its sympathy to her family and is working with the police and other agencies in the investigation.
