A SPECIAL street party was held to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
The party took place in Oak Street, Llangollen, where revellers dressed in 1940s outfits to mark 70 years since the end of Second World War hostilities in Europe.
Meanwhile, an air-raid siren was sounded on Queen’s Square, Wrexham on Friday to signal a two-minute silence, allowing people to reflect and pay respect to those who lost their lives.
Veterans and a number of local dignitaries attended the event, including the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr T Alan Edwards, who gave a reading.
The Mayor of Llangollen, Cllr Robert Lube said despite the weather, Saturday’s party in the town had been a great success.
“It went very well”, he said. “It was small but very successful and well-attended.
“The traders in Oak Street did a marvellous job.
“The weather wasn’t too kind but I’m glad we managed to keep the party on.
“We had a range of events, including maggot-racing, which was a new one for me.”
He added: “There is a lot of nostalgia for the relief of the war being over and it was good to see so many youngsters taking an interest and getting involved.” Unfortunately, the bad weather on Saturday meant a poppy picnic due to be held on Llwyn Isaf in Wrexham town centre, was cancelled.
