Writing creatively on the theme of Reflection in the local round of the Rotary Young Writer competition, the winners in the Intermediate and Senior sections were both from Oswestry School and each was submitted into the District competition against entries from schools in an area bounded by Southport, Nantwich, Llanidloes and the coast.
From around 400 initial entries, Rachel Roberts was judged winner in the Senior section and Noah Kynaston-Evans was the Intermediate section winner.
Both entries were submitted to the Rotary Young Writer national competition where they were both judged to be Highly Commendable.
Of Rachel’s entry the judges commented: “A powerful and upsetting piece that leaves the reader with a genuine sense of loss. The image of the final phone call and the phone being thrown away is particularly strong. The piece seemed polished and complete.”
Of Noah’s entry the comments were: “A mature piece with some excellent reflective phrases - ‘not to do better, but to be better’ and ‘because they have become me’. A few small punctuation issues that might have been seen by a closer proof read, but excellent overall.”
After presentation of the certificates to Rachel and Noah for their success in both District and National levels of the competition at Oswestry School, Rachel was also presented with the John Cranwell Young Writer Award for the best local entry into the Rotary Young Writer competition
The late Rotarian John Cranwell PHF was a founder member of Borderland Rotary and, for many years, was an antique bookseller trading as ‘Bookworld’ in Beatrice Street, Oswestry.
After John’s death in 2014, members of Borderland Rotary in Oswestry decided that, in keeping with John’s passion for the literary arts, a fitting memorial would be to recognise young people for their creative writing skills and a trophy for The John Cranwell Young Writer Award was commissioned.
This annual trophy is presented for the best submission to Borderland Rotary Club in the local round of Rotary’s Young Writer competition.
