AN OSWESTRY choir is looking for a ‘charismatic trained musician’ to take over from its departing director of music for 2025.

Cantiones, a 40-voice mixed choir based in Oswestry but with members in Shropshire and Wrexham, performs a wide range of repertoire to a high standard both in the town and further out.

The group, which recently performed at Chester Cathedral, also celebrated 40 years of performing and is hoping to appoint someone by the end of 2024.

A spokesman said: “Our current musical director Martin Bussey is to retire at the end of 2024 after five very successful years at the helm.

“So the search is on for a charismatic trained musician with a passion for choral singing to take over from January 2025.

“During his time with us, Martin has developed our technical skills and confidence with some challenging programmes of a cappella and accompanied works.

“Our 40th anniversary concert in 2022 featured a very successful performance of ‘The Creation’ by Haydn, with orchestra, in the Holroyd Theatre at Moreton Hall School, Weston Rhyn.

“The choir has just taken part in a truly memorable joint performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in Chester Cathedral with Chester Bach Singers and Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Martin Bussey.

“This will surely be regarded as the highlight of our current season.”
