FLOODING of villages around Oswestry is still possible, despite falling river levels, according to the Environment Agency (EA).

With the after effects of both Storms Gerrit and Henk still being felt by much of the country, flood warnings for the River Vyrnwy at both Maesbrook and in Melverley, close to the Shropshire/Powys border.

A spokesman for the EA said: “River levels remain high but are beginning to fall at the Llanymynech and Crew Green river gauges following recent heavy rainfall.

“Flooding is expected to continue. We expect flooding to affect properties and roads in and around Melverley including Melverley to Melverley Green and Ponthen to Melverley roads.”

The flood warning added that river levels in Crew Green peaked on Wednesday at nearly seven metres but the EA says that the Severn/Vyrnwy confluence is not at threat of flooding but an alert is in place.

Villages further up towards Shrewsbury are currently under water.

The spokesman added: “No further significant rainfall is forecast. We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

Meanwhile, Traffic Wales North and Mid has confirmed that the A483 from Arddleen and Poolquay has now reopened after it was closed because of heavy flooding.
