Shropshire Premier League Division One Cup

Claverley 0 St Martins Village 5

St Martins Village wrapped up a brilliant league and cup double after thrashing Claverley at Bucks Head in Telford on Saturday. Having wrapped up the league title weeks before, the Villagers put the cherry on their season with the resounding win.

Club official Steve McGowan is delighted to have sealed the double and believes the Villagers are at the start of a long journey if plans to bring football back to the village come to fruition.

"The league cup double celebrates just how far the team, management and committee have come over recent seasons," he said. "The initial idea of bringing football back to the village sits deep in the make-up of the team, with a high number of players with connections to the village returning to join up with players that have been helping the development of the team since 2014.

"These relationships have really begun to show around the village with a number of people now both coming to watch the team as well as provide sponsorship for home games.

"Committee members Linda McGowan, Claire Evans and myself put in a huge amount of their own time to not only allow the club to compete on a Saturday afternoon and train during the week, but ensure it can function and run as smoothly as possible.

"The prospect of the club being able to continue playing their football in the village at a sports centre with such modern facilities is a very exciting time to be involved with the club."

In the Premier League, Gobowen Celtic will host Oakengates Rangers Youth on Saturday.

Ellesmere Rangers 3, Stone Old Alleynians 3

A CONTROVERSIAL refereeing decision and a defensive blunder cost Rangers the win they deserved from this free-scoring encounter.

With 15 minutes left and with Ellesmere leading 3-2 the home side scored what looked to be the clincher when Stone’s keeper Callum Hope droppped the ball and Rangers dangerman Anwar Olugbon rolled the loose ball home but it was not given.

And five minutes from time Stone levelled when Jack Tomlinson had a clear run through to slip the ball under home keeper Mason Springthorpe.

Olugbon outpaced the home defence on 36 minutes to fire home at the right hand post and put Rangers ahead and James Bloor added a second before the interval. However Stone halved the deficit as Sam Wilson scored and the equaliser came seven minutes into the second half when Mike Mezarose blasted into the net from close range.

Rangers regained the lead on 60 minutes and again it was Olugbon who showed his game was more than pace, with a dinked a delicate effort over the keeper to float into the net.
