Gareth Bale became Wales's all-time leading scorer this week.

His hat-trick against China in Ryan Giggs's first game took him past Ian Rush's previous record of 28 goals by one, but I do wonder if he has underperformed in his career so far?

I think this season, the injuries have got in the way at Real Madrid but when's fit and and in form, he's fantastic.

But at Real, you're left thinking that he's undervalued and in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo. Is that his personality? I don't know. He's not like Ronaldo where he likes to be in the spotlight all the time.

For Wales, he's certainly had little niggles here and there but again, when fit, as a talisman playing well for his country, he's a joy to watch.

Domestically, is he a superstar? One of the 'galacticos' like the likes of his manager Zinedine Zidane or David Beckham. He's possibly not had the same path that Beckham had but I can't say that for sure.

But it does fell that way, that he's undervalued at Madrid and may have possibly underachieved there too.

The club themselves haven't done that well this season as Barcelona are running away with the league, and it's unknown if Zidane – who has two Champions League wins as a manager alone – will stay as coach.

Bale is a fantastic footballer but does he do it consistently enough? Maybe not. Maybe he's happy playing every now and then but having those little niggling injuries.
