I see Mark Hughes is back in management at Southampton where he played. I’m not sure what he’s done to deserve another go in the Premier League.
Has he ever won anything? I don’t he’s got anyone prom0oted but I think QPR were relegated by him. He’s a manager that does well early on with teams but seems to struggle within two to three years.
He’s got an ok managerial record but what’s he done to put himself in front of the other candidates. He’ll get a £1 million bonus if he keeps them up – for just doing his job – but the clubs are just so scared of going down that that money is nothing to them.
Can he do it? I don’t know. People are saying Southampton should have sold Virgil van Dijk in the summer and got the money for the players. They’re probably wishing they’d have done that.
Hughes has got a lot to improve. At Stoke, he was questioned every week whether he was going to keep his job but they replaced him in the end with Paul Lambert, who hasn’t done a great deal.
We talk about giving up-and-coming managers a chance but they’ve obviously looked at the candidates and don’t trust them, but trust Hughes because he has.
