THE latest sporting hero from Llanymynech Golf Club has returned from the Continent with a winner's gong, having secured a two-shot win in the Italian Seniors Championship.
Basil Griffiths, from Llanymynech, remained within touching distance of the leaders throughout the three-day competition, on a difficult course where round-ruining disasters were possible at every shot.

The competition, one of a series Basil enters around Europe, was played at Rome's Parco de Medici course, and having recorded encouraging results in the past, produced a consistent display on the final two days, following up an opening round 78 – three shots back on the leader – with a 75 on day two and a 74 on Saturday's final day of competition.

He admitted it was a nervy final round, but needing a par five on the 18th, the experienced campaigner held off the challenge of London's David Lane to hit a birdie four on the last and take the title. Basil later said he was pleased to have taken the win, but it took all of his skills to finish top of the pile.
