Sports stars pick up awards

MORE than 130 people attended the presentation of the 2007 Oswestry Sports Council Awards, where Steve Welti gave an inspirational speech and Don Howell, Chairman of Oswestry and District Sports Council, congratulated those who had done so well in the last 12 months.

Certificates were awarded to:
County: Emily Lewis, Lisa Jenkins, Tracey Royle, Rory Jones, Geraint Jones, Mark Siddorn, Phil Siddorn (Hockey), Megan Ballment (Cricket), Mandy Richards (CFPD). Region: Oliver Blake (Athletics). Country: Emma Jones (Special Olympics Table Tennis, Great Britain & Northern Ireland) Rachel Thomas (Special Olympics Badminton, Great Britain and Northern Ireland), Gemma Weetman (Athletics - Great Britain & Northern Ireland), Helen Goss (Cricket, Wales), Tom Shackell (CFPD Wales).

Disability Sport Award: David Holland, North Shropshire Special Olympics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics and Swimming.
Christine Hughes, Junior Team Award: Llanymynech Juniors FC Girls Under 10 (The Lemurs). Unbeaten debut season, scoring 118 goals and conceding only 14.

Coach of the Year: Meg Ballment, Oswestry and Shropshire Hockey.
Contribution to Sport Award: Jon Hancock, Chairman of Oswestry Olympians.

Richard Burbidge Award for Outstanding Achievement: Oliver Blake, 800 metre runner, seventh in the British Under 20 rankings.

Advertizer Sports Personality of the Year: Gemma Weetman, heptathlete and captain of the Great Britain Under 23 team.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Given posthumously to Doug Morris, who worked so hard for sport in Oswestry (accepted by his wife, Margaret).
