Saints' title hopes fade
Welsh Premier League
Newtown AFC 0,
The New Saints 0
THE New Saints practically bade farewell to their title chances with this goalless draw away at Newtown on Saturday.

Despite creating a hatful of chances the Saints just could not find the target while restricting Newtown to just a couple of clear
cut openings.

Toner just failed to get his head to a Townson cross but the biggest miss of the match came from Jamie Wood who hit the post four minutes before half time.

Scott Ruscoe had earlier gone close with a 20 yard free kick while Newtown 'keeper Dave Jones pulled off some good saves to keep the sheet clean.

In the second half Saints found it harder to create chances against Newtown's resilient defending.

Toner, Beck and Townson all had shots blocked in a 57th minute barrage in the Newtown box before Richard Williams Cooke almost capitalised on an injury to Phil Baker. Worton raced away to cross to the far post but 'keeper Paul Harrison produced a fine block to save the shot and the day.

With Llanelli winning 4-2 at Porthmadog only an almighty slip by them would be enough to get the Saints back in the race.

  • The New Saints play again on Friday at the Deeside Stadium against Connah's Quay in the league. Kick off 7.30pm.
