In the baking sun of Val Di Sole, all eyes were on Oswestry's three Atherton siblings - Dan, Gee and Rachel - following their recent triple-win in Andorra.

Things had looked bleak when eldest brother, Dan, sustained a broken collar bone in qualifying for the four-cross event, but then Rachel stepped up to the start-gate for the women's downhill final, with reigning champion Sabrina Jonnier of France sitting pretty at the bottom of the course having set a tough time.

Rachel flew out of the start gate, riding well on a technical track and
hitting the split-time marker a staggering nine seconds ahead of Jonnier's time, leaving no doubt among the thousands of spectators that she was gunning for victory.

Expectation

Crossing the line a staggering 11.99 seconds ahead of her closest rival, Rachel followed up her 2006 Junior World title, with one of the biggest ever winning margins in World Championship history.

With a looming sense of expectation, the eyes of the crowd then moved to the men's downhill, where brother Gee was up against a strong world class field. As the last man down the course, Gee had the lightning fast time of fellow Team GB rider Steve Peat to beat, but did not disappoint.

Through the split-marker he was two seconds clear, maintaining that margin down through the finish and shooting across the line into an elated Atherton huddle, the family becoming the first in the sport's history to win two world titles in the same year.

It was a great result for the Great Britain team who finished fourth overall with three gold medals and two silvers and the rest of Oswestry's five strong contingent on the British team added to the fine result. Young trials rider Sam Oliver took 22nd in the 20" Juniors category semi final and 17th in the 26" Juniors final, while Fionn Griffiths took eighth place in the women's downhill ahead of New Zealand's Scarlett Hagen and less than half a second behind USA's Kathleen Pruitt, having also made the quarter finals of four-cross, as the fastest qualifier.
