COUNCILLORS are due to decide whether to grant planning permission for the Oswald Park Leisure Centre at tonight's (Tuesday) Development Control Committee meeting.

The centre would comprise of swimming pools, multi-use sports hall, fitness gym, dance/function hall, cafeteria. creche and ancillary accommodation to replace the current centre on College Road, Oswestry.

The centre would share access with the college off Shrewsbury Road, with nearly 150 car parking spaces.

The application includes a number of elements other than the main building, though details of these have yet to be submitted, they include a Multi Use Games Area, a BMX park and a full size football pitch.

Investigations

An archaeological survey on the land concluded that whilst features and items of interest were discovered, including a burnt mound dating from the bronze age, subject to further investigation this should not preclude development.

The planning officer's report has recommended that the proposal is permitted, with conditions as: "It is the only realistic opportunity to provide identifiable and required improvements to leisure and sporting facilities in the town."

The council will need to depart from the local plan to approve the plans as it is outside the development boundary for Oswestry Town, this can be done in exceptional circumstances, including proposals in the public interest.

Letters of concern regarding the loss of the squash courts have been received.
