THE New Saints Football Club is looking at changing its name to incorporate Oswestry into the title, following calls from fans.
The club say fans have become keen for a change to the name following their move to The Venue at Park Hall, despite the inclusion of both Llansantffraid and Oswestry crests on the club's badge.

Suggestions put forward so far have included, Oswestry Town New Saints and The Oswestry New Saints, both of which would allow the club to retain the TNS abbreviation and both of which have the support of Managing Director, Mike Harris, who added: "A name that has a greater inclusion of Oswestry, is something I would be very supportive of, should this be the wish of the majority of the fans."

Llansantffraid FC originally adopted the TNS name when the club was bought by the TNS firm in 1997. The club later merged with Oswestry Town FC, both playing under the TNS banner, before the name was changed to The New Saints FC at the start of the 2005 season.

"Fans of TNS are being encouraged to make their voice heard by filling in one of the short surveys that will be available at home games," added Mike Harris, who explained the inclusion of the word 'Saints' in the name had been a mutual theme from both Llansantffraid nickname of The Saints and Oswestry's famous links with Saint Oswald.

If popular with the club's supporters, the club say a new name could be in place for next season.

In mythology, a Chimera is a cross between a lion (Oswestry/England) and a dragon (Llansantffraid/Wales), so why not the Chimeras?

The Oswald New Saints

or

The New Saint Oswalds

Either would provide lots of scope for a new, improved team logo!

Just call the club Oswestry Town.
There is no link with Llansantffraid anymore.
Mr Harris has slammed the door on the village.
He got what he wanted, publicity and a foot in the door.
Let Llansantffraid FC continue as an Amateur League club in their own name.

Before moving to wigan in 1978, I grew up supporting Oswestry Town F.C. I even watched them in the Northern Premier League.

Only saw them once in the League of Wales.

I would love to see the name Oswestry Town New Saints or Oswald New Saints. Maybe a return to the blue shirt.

More importantly the people of the town and local businesses support the club. If they had before, Maybe Oswestry Town would not have gone the way they did.

Hopefully the people of Llasntsantfried will have a team to be proud of aswell. They must feel a bit let down just as im sure some town fans did following the merger.

Heres hopeing for some success no matter what the name is.

James Morgan.
