Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League
The New Saints 6, Haverfordwest 2
THE New Saints gave Haverfordwest a caning with six of the best at Park Hall on Saturday.
But Llanelli, who maintained their 10-point advantage with a 1-0 home win over Airbus, are still overwhelming favourites for the title with TNS eyeing second place, six points ahead of Rhyl who they visit tonight (Tuesday).

Saints rested several k
ey players but were always in control after Toner seized on a Paul Henry pass inside the box to fire past visiting 'keeper Lee Idzi after four minutes.

It was 2-0 in the 16th minute when a great move ended with Barry Hogan finding Mike Wilde whose driven cross was turned home by Wood from six yards.

With barely a quarter of the game gone Saints were home and dry when Leah's low shot was fumbled by Idzi and Toner fired home the rebound from close range.

Just after the interval Haverfordwest pulled one back through Bowen who fired across the 'keeper but any hopes of a revival were ended when Wood crossed for Wilde to volley home just before the hour.

Beck and Wilde again went close before Saints went 5-1 up in the 66th minute when Wood cut in from the left, rounded the 'keeper and was about to shoot when Wilde nicked the ball off his toes to score.

County pulled another goal back after confusion in the Saints defence saw Christopher fire home after a scramble, but Saints had the last word when Toner completed his hat-trick with a header from eight yards which went in off the bar.

  • Saints now start a run of three successive away games against Rhyl

  • tonight, followed by a trip to Airbus UK on Friday and a journey to Connah's Quay next Tuesday (April 15).
