FOR the second week running, a superb century by South African Warrick Fynn was not enough to stave off defeat for Oswestry's cricketers in the Birmingham League.

The first game staged at this level at Morda Road, watched by a large crowd, ended in a five-wicket win for the visitors Wombourne.

Fynn blasted an unbeaten 116, sharing a century opening stand with Alex Huxley (38), as Oswestry reached 211-6 in
their 55 overs. Tim Bierley's 20 was the only other significant contribution.

Once again Oswestry were guilty of dropping catches as Wombourne replied with 212-5.

Promising young opener Alex Hughes survived several chances to top-score with 88, while Fynn and Mark Robinson took two wickets apiece.
Oswestry Seconds recorded their first Birmingham League success, winning by four wickets at Wombourne.

Newcomer Marcus Bowman took 3-24 and Steve O¹Reilly 3-31 as Wombourne were bowled out for 169. Ollie Clarke and Jim Phillips picked up two wickets apiece.

Dave Shaw led the Oswestry reply with 74 and Andrew Clarke hit 41 as Oswestry reached their target at 170-6.

An inexperienced Oswestry Third XI performed well to earn a winning draw at Pontesbury Seconds, while Oswestry Fourths collected maximum points against Condover Seconds, who were unable to raise a side.

  • This Saturday Oswestry make a long journey to Brockhampton, while the Seconds are at home to their Brock counterparts.
