Club snookered by decision
OSWESTRY Conservative Club's snooker and billiards teams have been left angry and disappointed by the club's decision to sell their tables, leaving the leagues' most successful ever side homeless.
Founded in 1947, the club has enjoyed a proud tradition of high quality players, including the likes of Arthur Phillips, Les Vaughan and Bill Cobb, as well as current stalwarts such as Brian Tudor, a member for more than 50 years , who like his teammates has now been forced to look for a new home.
"It is now down to the players of today, many of who have represented the club for between 20 and 30 years to keep the tradition going," says Paul Seliaerts, a member for more than 30 years.
He said it was desperately disappointing to have lost their home, adding that with 32 midweek matches during the year bringing home and visiting players into the Conservative Club on normally quiet evenings, they found it hard to understand the Committee's decision to get rid of them.
"We used to have two tables. We lost one table with the move to the new premises and now we have no table at all," he said, "We will play out the side's last few games at other venues, but will have to meet as a club and see what to do for next year. It's very disappointing," he added.
The Conservative Club were invited to explain their decision, but said they did not wish to comment.
