A CHIRK teenager is celebrating after winning a national shooting championship.
Kieran Lewis from Lloyds Lane had been competing in this year’s Junior UK Championship Hunter Field Target Shooting 14-16 group throughout the last nine months before triumphing in a closely fought final.
The 15-year-old said the win came as a complete surprise. “I felt quite excited to win and I really enjoyed the tournament, but I wasn’t expecting it. I didn’t know too many others taking part, but we all got on really well and it was good,” he said.
Held at shooting clubs around the country, the nine-round tournament whittled down competitors, leaving the final six to compete in the knockout stage held in October.
The Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llangollen, pupil, who is currently studying towards his GCSEs next summer, took up the sport three years ago following in the footsteps of his father, Brian, and the pair train at a Chester Target Shooting Club.
Kieran will now continue training over the winter, before the new season starts in May.
“I’m going to take part in the championship again next year and hope to do well again,” he added.
