Llansanffraid's unfinished business

RAY Jones and Llansanffraid Village have unfinished business in the Huws Gray Alliance League.

The Saints had a brief yet successful stint in the Huws Gray Alliance which saw the club champions in 1993 before their incarnation to the abbreviations of Oswestry-based telecommunications firm Total Network Solutions in 1996 and subsequent relocation to Oswestry.

Since then the reborn Llansanffraid Village have wasted little time in climbing the pyramid, with the ambitious Jones targeting a place in the second tier of Welsh football.

The club's home ground of Treflan almost meets top flight criteria with previous tenants TNS having developed facilities during its decade playing out of the village.

This has ensured the club has the foundations to climb the Welsh pyramid which has seen criteria tighten in recent years.

"We applied last year and are in the process of applying again this season," said Jones who has previous Alliance experience with Guilsfield while also managing TNS Reserves in the past.

"Everything is in place and having met ground criteria last season we would expect to do so again this time around."

However, Jones admitted his side faced an uphill battle as the race for the Spar Mid Wales League title  began to heat up with local rivals Llanrhaeadr and Berriew favourites.
"Both sides have enjoyed fantastic starts to the season with Llanrhaeadr boasting a great defensive record while Neil Pryce has continued where Russell Cadwallader left off at Berriew.
"There are some other teams in the league capable of mounting a challenge apart from ourselves and I expect Carno, Tywyn Bryncrug, Penparcau and Bow Street to be up there come the end."

Jones has also vowed the club will never again surrender its identity with the current club born in the wake of TNS' merger and subsequent relocation over the border into England.

"The club is committed to its own plans to develop and climb the pyramid, said Jones. "We have a great set of lads at the club and we are fortunate to have a superb committee."
