Llansantffraid Village Cup Final

HAVING collected the J T. Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League Division two championship trophy the previous Saturday, Trefonen’s hopes of a league and cup double were dashed on Friday night when they lost 4-1 to Division One side Abermule.

However the scoreline and manner of their defeat was a trifle harsh on Nick Popyk’s side who kept the game tight in a goal-less first half.

The second half started in controversial circumstances early in the second half when Darren Jones was harshly adjudged to have fouled Nick Benton, but justice was done when Paul Williams shot wide from the spot.

But midway through the half Benton again went down in the box under challenge from Derek Lloyd. Again there appeared no contact but Benton took the kick himself and made no mistake.

Keeper Paul Morris was shown a red card for his protest, thus virtually ending Trefonen’s hopes of a comeback.

Steff Rowlands added a second from a controversial free kick and Rob Bayliss made it three before Trefonen pulled one back from a Tommy Lewis free kick.
In stoppage time Rowlands made it 4-1 to complete the scoring.
