THE New Saints made if safely through to the Welsh Cup quarter finals with a comfortable victory at The Flyover on Saturday.
Despite the scoreline, the hosts from two levels below the Welsh Premier, battled right through the 90 minutes even after it was clear the game was beyond them.
Saints opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Steve Abbott who fired past Junction ’keeper Liam Ewing following a left wing corner.
After going close to adding to their lead on several occasions, Saints broke through again in the 23rd minute when a low 30-yarder from Phil Baker went through the legs of Ewing and trickled over the line.
A minute from the interval the game was over as a contest when Seargeant outpaced three defenders and tucked his shot past Ewing at the left hand post from 10 yards.
While Junction were looking to the half-time break for inspiration, Saints made it 4-0 as Evans headed home Seargeant’s left wing corner from 10 yards at the near post.
Charmed life
The Junction goal bore a charmed life after the break with Abbott going closest when his shot was cleared off the line by Antony Wilson.
A two-goal burst mid-way through the second half emphasised Saints’ superiority with Seargeant finding the corner of the net with a low angled drive from 10 yards and Abbott firing home when Williams’ header came back off the bar with 15 minutes to go.
Saints had further chances to extend their lead but Junction battled to the end with ’keeper Ewing in the home goal making a succession of saves to maintain their respectability.
Saints now face Port Talbot in the Welsh Cup quarter finals on February 27 at Park Hall.
