The sixth annual Oswestry Community Games is taking place in Cae Glas Park next month.

There will be local sport, music and dance from organisations around the area that provide free activities throughout the day.

The event is held between 11am and 3.45pm on Sunday, September 23.

This year the event welcomes Dianne Carrington of Pontesbury as the guest of honour.

Dianne, 62, was part of an all-female trio that took on the Talisker Whickey Atlantic Challenge, which involves rowing 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean.

She became the oldest woman to row the Atlantic and her trio broke three world records, in a journey that took 60 days and involved coming up against 40-foot waves and very strong winds.

Dianne said: “I am honoured and delighted to be involved in this special day.

“It really is a privilege to attend the Oswestry Community Games, and I very much look forward to contributing towards making the Games a success once again.”

Dianne’s chosen charity for the event this year is charity Relapsing Polychondritis UK.

The games are also welcoming back David Davies as the MC for the day – he took on this role back in 2016.

This year the Community Games has already secured the financial backing of Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry Sports Forum, Wynnstay Hotel, Growth 50 Ltd, Arla Foods, Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing Ltd and Mary Hignett Bequest Fund.

Clive Knight who is a key organiser and looks after the finances said: “It is very encouraging to have achieved this level of local financial support, and we are very grateful to all our sponsors.”
