Oswestry 7

Winnington Park 40

Oswestry were unable to stop league champions Winnington Park RFC picking up a 100 per cent record on Saturday.

The Eagles started well, dominating the first 20 minutes, camping in the visitor's half with strong runs from a number of players including Andrew Smith, Olly Wilford, Connor Blair, Guy Roberts, Jonathan Hughes, Andrew Merit and James Roberts who were all supported by Nick Clay and Noah Chunsi. Unfortunately during this good spell Oswestry could not push over their territory advantage and Winnington scored against the run of play to make it 0-7.

Oswestry came right back at them but again could not break through their defence lines. After 26 minutes Iwan Ellis had to come off for treatment by Lottie Beard and was temporally replaced by Fabrizio Gaito. Another good spell of play by Oswestry almost led to a try by Merit, but another error and again while defending their own line, Winnington's wing ran almost the entire length of the pitch to score their second try,w hichw as converted to make it 0-14, before adding another unconverted try to make it 0-19 at the break.

As the second-half started Ellis returned to the play. This time the visitors started to play like league leaders and soon nailed a converted try, making it 0-26.

Oswestry did not give up however; Jack Jones replaced Mike Keaveny and from the restart attacked the visitors. After 15 minutes of play following a charge by the pack into the 22, Wilford used his strength to push over and score a try. Chunsi stood up and converted the try making the score 7-26.

However, Winnington added two more converted tried to make it 7-40 at the break, with the only difference between the two teams being fitness and Winnington's ruthlessness. It was Lottie Beard’s last game for Oswestry; she was applauded off the pitch by both teams after being an excellent servant of the club for five years, and all wish Lottie all the best for the future in her new career at the Orthopaedic Hospital.
