Arla Junior Table Tennis Grand Prix

In the second round of the Arla Junior Table Tennis Grand Prix held at Morda,winners came from Criftins, and Morda.

The competition was split into groups of near equal ability, and then handicaps applied.

In the top group, Paul Sissons (Llansilin) the first round winner, got off to a poor start going down to Kobe Jones (Morda). New to the competition Zac Penderleath (Criftins) had a straight sets win over Max Lloyd (Morda). Elliott Birch (Marches School) was doing well with wins over Penderleath and Sissons. Alex Jones (Criftins), who was having to give a big handicap to all players in the group, found the task too big to manage. Penderleath seemed favourite for the group title, but faltered in his final match going down 12-10, 11-8 to Alex Jones.

Group result: 1, Elliott Birch; 2, Zac Penderleath; 3, Kobe Jones.

In the middle group, the matches became even closer that the first group. Jonty Lewers (Morda) fought out close matches with Abigail Whitehead (Morda), Isaac Jones (Morda), and Harvey Greig (Marches School), winning all in close three set encounters. Jonty’s brother Kit was finding the going difficult also, taking wins over Whitehead and Isaac Jones, but was defeated by Greig in three set 12-14, 15-13, 8-11. Carla Jones (Morda) had wins over Kit Lewers and Greig but again failed to beat brother Isaac. Jonty Lewers completed wins over Carla Jones to finish unbeaten on the night.

Group result: 1, Jonty Lewers; 2, Abigail Whitehead; 3, Harvey Greig.

In Group 3 there were only four players. First round winner, Joe Griffiths, now had to give points to his club mate Max Penderleath (Criftins) and two new players to the competition. First up was Griffiths and Penderleath who knew each other’s game well. Even with a two-point start, Penderleath could not stop Griffith winning. Tom Robinson (Marches School) took on new comer Jake Owen (Trefonen School). Robinson tried hard but could not overcome Owen who won 11-13, 11-8, 12-10. Owen and Robinson both defeated Penderleath but only in very close matches. The group title went to the final match were Owen and Griffiths were undefeated. Owen taking Griffiths to the third set, but finally going down 8-11, 11-6, 8-11.

Group result: 1, Joe Griffiths; 2, Jake Owen; 3, Tom Robinson.
