A YOUNG rugby star has been selected to join a big league team.
14-year-old George Garratt, pictured, who currently plays for Oswestry Rugby Club’s (ORC) Under 14s team, has been called up to join the ranks of the player development pathway for the Worcester Warriors’ academy.
The Marches School pupil is one of 150 talented players chosen from U13 to U18 teams within the Midlands area to train weekly at one of three local development centres for the Aviva Premiership club.
George’s dad Paul, who is also the ORC’s U14 coach, said: “We were thrilled to have a phonecall from the Worcester Warriors with the offer to train at their academy.”
The programme is run by the coaches and managers of the Worcester Warriors Academy who help develop youngster’s sporting skills and see if they have what it takes to become a Worcester Warrior.
George has already completed three sessions with the academy coaches at Telford College and trains for two hours every Thursday. But his new regime will consist of a total of four six-week blocks for 24 weeks.
Steve Charmley, chairman of ORC, added: “We wish George all the best for the coming season.
“We are sure he will represent himself and Oswestry with honour and pride.”
