A FORMER Oswestry Town footballer has found himself at the centre of the latest high-profile incident to smear English football after he was allegedly attacked with a pint glass following his side’s recent league encounter.

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson watched his team slip to a 3-2 defeat on December 8 at Brentford in Football League One, but it is understood that police are investigating as to whether a glass was thrown at the Liverpool-born striker as stewards stepped in to avert a confrontation between Robinson and a group of opposing fans.

Brentford have denied a glass was thrown but the incident is the latest to hit the footballing headlines following a string of race-related allegations, while Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, received a cut above his eye from a coin thrown from the crowd as he celebrated his side’s winner at Manchester City during the same weekend.

Robinson played a total of 31 league games for Oswestry from 2002-2003, scoring five goals as the side miraculously avoided what seemed certain relegation to ensure a merger with Total Network Solutions before becoming The New Saints Football Club.

Speaking to the Advertizer in 2011, Robinson reminisced about his Oswestry days saying: “I certainly remember my time at Oswestry Town, particularly during our escape on the last day of the season which meant we avoided relegation which was a fantastic feeling because we had worked so hard.
“I really enjoyed my time at the club but having such a bad back meant I could never play for more than an hour at a time,” he added.

Brentford chief executive, Mark Devlin, has however reportedly denied that any glass was thrown at Robinson, telling reporters: “I was distressed to read reports about a glass being thrown, I witnessed the events myself.
“Some beer was thrown, most of which hit our operations manager and a couple of stewards.
“I can categorically say no glass was thrown at Karl Robinson,” he added.

Trouble flared as Robinson made his way to the team bus at Griffin Park following the defeat.
MK Dons are believed to be assisting Brentford with their investigation into the incident.
