A project to create a garden for patients recovering from spinal injuries at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen has received a further cash boost of more than £2,000.

The money was raised through ticket sales for a major spinal injury conference held at the hospital by Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in March, and one of the organisers also ran a half-marathon to add more to the total.

The money was donated to the Horatio’s Garden charity, which works to create accessible gardens in spinal injury units across the country.

The garden project at the hospital has been designed by Gardener’s World’s Bunny Guinness and work is due to start later this year.

Dawn Humphries, partner and personal injury specialist at Lanyon Bowdler, said the conference about living with spinal injury was a great success.

She said: “We had world-renowned experts speaking about the advances in treatment and rehabilitation, including specialists from the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries at the Orthopaedic itself, and inspiring experiences from patients.

“Part of the remit of the event was to put something back into the hospital community, so we were delighted to be able to donate £2,000 to the Horatio’s Garden project at Oswestry."

She added: “We hope the £2,000 raised through the conference will help bring the Orthopaedic garden closer to fruition.”

Dawn also raised a further £355 by running the London Landmarks Half Marathon shortly after the conference.

She added: “During the run, I was inspired by the challenges some of my spinal injured clients face on a daily basis with such strength and fortitude.

“It was not my fastest run but certainly the most rewarding and memorable event I have ever done. I am really delighted that so many people sponsored me, and those funds will go to such a worthy cause.”

Dr Olivia Chapple, of the Horatio’s Garden charity, thanked Dawn and the team at Lanyon Bowdler for the donation.

She said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Lanyon Bowdler are supporting Horatio’s Garden Oswestry and can’t wait to start building - their fundraising brings us ever closer.

“Thank you so much to everyone involved. We have seen the impact a beautiful garden can have on patients with spinal injuries at our gardens in Salisbury and Glasgow and look forward to bringing this to Oswestry.”
